How Nonprofits Benefit from a Community Leadership Development Needs Assessment

Have you ever thought that there is room for leadership development in your organization, but you aren’t sure where to start?

 

One way to assess these needs is through community-based participatory research. Community-based participatory research “enlists those who are most affected by a community issue to conduct research on and analyze that issue, with the goal of devising strategies to resolve it” University of Kansas Center for Community Health and Development.

 

Artisan HR, a strengths-based consultancy in Lincoln, Nebraska, is conducting such a study in the form of a Community Leadership Development Needs Assessment. Our research will involve Executive Directors and Board Presidents, consisting of surveys, focus groups, and key informant interviews.

 

 

Why Conduct a Community Needs Assessment?

 

The Community Toolbox provided by the Center for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas outlines how to develop a plan for assessing local needs and resources. In light of nonprofit leadership development needs, here are some reasons why you might want to conduct a community assessment:

 

  • To determine how to address the training needs of leaders

  • To assess the impact of training, in order to inform strategies for approaching solutions

  • To identify any barriers to engaging in leadership training
     

Artisan will use this assessment to paint a broad picture of the leadership development landscape of Lincoln, Nebraska nonprofit organizations. Our goal is to identify potential ways of addressing leadership training needs.

 

 

What Can You Do with the Results?

 

Participants in this research will be among the first to see its results, which will identify local nonprofit leadership needs and preferred ways of addressing them. This information will be useful for Executive Directors and Boards as you make strategic decisions for your organization. We believe that you will also find these results practical for discussions with donors, foundations, and partners.
